Finished things and organizing

Look! I finished a sock. And I hate it. The yarn is not good for socks. 100% cotton = no give = giant holes at my short rows. And the yarn looks like I spilled orange Koolaid on it. Just little rows of about 5 stitches here and there have a distinctly orange tint. So I bound of this one (It doesn't evens stretch to fit on my foot) and called it a day. I will use the rest of that yarn to make dishclothes or something.

But Teresa's scarf is coming along nicely. The charcoal color doesn't really allow you to see all of the detail. I am also playing with taking pictures only in natural light. Working much better than my flash. I need to pick up a piece of white poster board for a background and I will be set. And it is much easier now with my new setup. New setup? Don't worry, I'm getting to that.

I realized that I am due to make my donation to GTA soon. So I worked on that most of the weekend. Once I was able to find it all, I realized I had a lot of "baby" yarn. Yay for clearing out the stash. More room for new stuff.

There is peace. They were like 5 inches from each other and sleeping peacefully while I was present. I was shocked and snapped a picture to prove it happened.

ORGANIZATION!!!! I finally bought two more of those big plastic shelf drawer thingys and organized my yarn by color. (in addition to the two I already have downstairs for other crafting goodness) No more giant bottomless totes holding my yarn. If I want blue yarn, I open up the second drawer of the set closest to the couch and ta da! blue yarn. As you can also see, no more digging through all of my looms to find them. They are nicely arranged in artistic fashion on the wall. Tracey, ignore the large pile of khaki and cream goodness there on the right. :) And on the left you can see my toolbox that holds all of my hooks, needles, and notions (at 97 cents was the awesomest buy at walmart). And I have one small tote left for WIP's and UFO's. And I have small plastic boxes for my needle felting and uber varigated yarn. The stuff that I had no idea what color to file it under. So it is all organized. Very very excited about this. You can see that drawer set number 2 blocks that door, but it is on wheels and can easily be moved out of the way when it becomes warm enough to venture onto the balcony/when we have company. Actually both sets are on wheels for that purpose. Which, I'm supposed to be planning a party at some point. Must remember to do that.

Found the lyrics to the Doozer Knitting song

The Muppets - Doozer Knitting Song lyrics

It's neat and it's sweet
It's a ding dong treat
Knittin' socks for little feet
Just sittin' with your knittin' all day long
You know knittin's friendly
And knittin's fun
Knittin's good for everyone
And that is why we sing this knittin' song
Well it's knit one pearl two
What's a Doozer gonna do
With a gol-darn
Ball of yarn?
It's stitch three drop four
Pitch that knittin' out the door right now
There's a green there's a red
There's a knot in my thread
A knitter needs his noggin read
So don't come 'round and speak to me of yarn
You can k-nit all day and k-nothin' fits
'Cause only k-nitwits like to k-nit
And k-nittin' k-needles just ain't worth a darn
Well it's knit one pearl two
What's a Doozer gonna do
With a gol-darn
Ball of yarn?
It's stitch three drop four
Pitch that knittin' out the door right now

Lots to update

I've been bad about updating. I kept forgetting to take pictures. And I have to update my character blog for the Hogwarts Sock Kit Swap once a week. And this is the first week students have been back after break and I didn't remember until I was on my way to work on Monday. I was not prepared.

But I turned the heel in my first sock. Three more inches and it will be done. And I will stare at it and think "I don't want to make another one of that". Not that I don't like the process of sock knitting. I just don't want to knit that one again. Hence the reason I bought this:

2-at-a-time socks. If I can figure out how this works, I will never suffer from 2nd sock syndrome again. Plus it has some really cute patterns in it. Even if I don't end up using the method.

I spent part of the weekend working on this little dude. I am very proud of him. And I take crappy pictures. We all know Fraggle Rock, right? You remember the Doozers? Well...recognize the resemblance? There ya go, I crocheted a Doozer. Not just any Doozer, a knitting one. Why? Well at SnB last week, they were playing episodes of Fraggle Rock. During the Great Radish Famine episode there was a scene of the Doozers singing and KNITTING! So I made one. So cute.

Look, my next project. Only after I finish something I am working on right now. Crappy picture. But it is a shrug knit with lace weight wool (well I am using alpaca). You knit one giant rectangle and then button up along the edges to make "sleeves". And you use a bit of I-cord to gather up the ends so it isn't so billowy. I am making it out of Frog Tree brushed Suri in a lovely charcoal color. It will be perfect for when it starts getting warmer. I can have it at work. For some reason we keep it at like 50 degrees inside and it is like 90 outside. Makes getting dressed difficult. If I wear short sleeves, I freeze all day at work. But if I wear long sleeves I can't be outside for more than 3 minutes without melting. But it is my first lace project and I'm excited. I am skipping the sweater because by the time I finish it, it will be summer and I'll be pissed. So I am making something during winter I can wear in spring and summer. OMG! I used logic.

And this, is called an abacus bracelet. Someone told me about this magnificent creation last night and I had all my jewelry making supplies out to make stitch markers for my swap partner. How convinient. She is just lucky I found a tutorial online or I would have been up a lot later than I should have. It is a fashion accessory and a knitting tool. Cool, huh? Look at it bigger. There is a ring of beads around the middle there. One strand of the bracelet has 9 beads and one has 10. Well each time I knit a row or cast on a stitch, I move one of the beads on the 9 strand through the ring of beads towards the big blue bead. When I finish the 10th row, I move all of those 9 bead back through and push through one of the beads on the other strand. Then I start again with the small bead until I hit 20 and move another big bead. I even added a little hook that holds stitch markers (they don't stay on if you are just wearing the bracelet for fun, but while I sit and knit they should be ok). You have to admit that is cool. I think my swap partner might be getting one of these along with her stitch markers.

Not much to take pictures of

Not much to blog about really. Waiting until it isn't too early to go hang out at the coffee shop and wait for my Stitch 'n Bitch. Still working on my sock and the scarf and another present. Cast onto a scarf for Theresa. A charcoal and long version of the purple cabled scarf in another post. But not really enough of it to take a picture. I am hoping to finish my FIL's scarf tonight. Then get the other present done this weekend. And since I finished my Booga Bag, that would give me the opportunity to cast onto a new project. Whatever shall it be. Well I know. It has cables and will be blue, actually it will match my slouchy puffy hat but it is bigger than a hat. But I can still wear it. Ooooo the suspense.

Here is El Booga Bag in all its needle felted glory. A little abstract, but would be perfect to carry around a single knitting project.

I am now participating in two swaps. The Hogwarts Sock Kit Swap and the Harry Potter Crafts Valentine's ATC. The HSKS I have until April 4th to finish and I only have to make a bag and some stitch markers (I do have to buy sock yarn, a sock pattern and needles but that won't take too much time). The ATC's (Artist Trading Cards) are almost done. I would post a picture, but that would ruin the surprise. I promise to post pictures and patterns when they are sent out. Speaking of patterns, I am getting mine typed up. Maybe posted by the end of the month. **gasp**

Christmas with Mom

We spent the past weekend with my mom and her boyfriend, Brian. We had a late Christmas celebration. She liked her hat and scarf set. See her modeling attempt at left. I made out with some great haul. I got Isela Phelp's Loom Knitting Primer. A great book. And some looms to go with it. Got the long purple Knifty knitter so my Knifty Knitter set is complete. I got some socks. I know I'm forgetting stuff and she is going to yell at me when I talk to her. But I have to say my favorite item was Charmed Knits. I have been wanting this forever. I mean come on, Harry Potter plus knitting has to equal awesome. Well, apparently everyone did think it was the perfect gift for me. So perfect that they figured someone else would have already gotten it for me. Yay for mom for taking a risk. Oh and a knitting calendar too. One of the page a day ones.

Aww they are exhausted from all the fun

Got some knitting done on my first sock. Almost to the heel. Like 1.5 inches left. Pattern from Knitty

So this is what my FIL's scarf was supposed to look like. Oooooh...Ahhhhh!!! Look at that lovely cable pattern I made up. Fear my mad designing skills. Well, until it started rolling into a tube. Kind of defeats the purpose of a decorative cable if it is on the inside of a tube. And of course since it was knit in acrylic, no blocking or ironing to get it to stay flat. So I ripped it up.

And turned it into this. A mock rib crocheted scarf. Got it halfway done when I ran out of yarn. Going to AC Moore to get some more today. So close to having Christmas presents done I can taste it. What is that you say? It's after Christmas? pish posh. It's still cold so they will still be useful. I hope

Resolution failure

So I made it two days. And http://www.allthingsshea.blogspot.com/ made me fess up to it. She's running a contest where you tell her the resolution you know you aren't going to keep. And I know I'm not gonna keep # 1. Why did I even make it # 1. I cast on for a sock yesterday which brings my WIP total up to 4. But it's my first sock ever. Do I at least get some points for fufilling one resolution while breaking another (# 2 learning to knit socks). And I went through my craft stuff and got rid of things (I'm not done yet either). And I started typing up patterns. So in my mind, the ratio of working on to broken ones is really good right now. I've even been using the Wii to get some exercise.

Because maybe if I tell people about them, I'll stick to them

So here are my resolutions/goals for 2008
  1. Have no more than 3 WIP's (works in progress) going at once. Blankets don't count on account of the time commitment. Mass produced items such as fleece blankets for GTA count as one.
  2. Learn a new knitting technique or two
    1. knitting socks
    2. knitting socks with the magic cable technique
    3. learn to cable without cable needles
  3. Publish something on LKC
  4. Type up all of my patterns from 2007 (8 of them, well 9 there are two scarves on one page, and I'm not counting all the different HP ornaments as seperate)
  5. Spend less money on yarn and stuff I don't need. Maybe buy a gift card at the beginning of the month and make that my craft spending budget for the month. In general save more money. I.E. enough to go see Becca.
  6. Organize all my crafts supplies and get rid of items I don't need (all my left over wedding stuff, some scrapbook stuff)
  7. Lose weight (what kind of resolution list would it be without this one)
  8. Organize all our movies and CDs and made a list of them all. Replace all VHS with DVD's
So there we go. I think I can handle this list. I know it's a lot of crafty stuff, but that is all I could think of that I needed to work on. If anyone has suggestions I'll gladly take them. So Happy New Year
